Budget Interview

Who/job: Quinn Williams, financial director for Jefferson Academy charter school

Summary: This was a sit down interview to discuss how Quinn manages the budget of Jefferson Academy. He stated that he feels they use the most money on staff and their wages. He answered my question that he and another member of the financial team are the first to go over the budget and if cuts need to be made there is a meeting with more of the staff. He stated that their employees help to reduce cost by carefully documenting what they use and to not use more supplies than they need. He was a very pleasant man and explained that managing the budget can be very stressful at times, especially when they are continually over budget.

Outcomes: This interview helped me to better understand budgeting and how it is managed. This will help me in my career by helping me to be more understanding if my unit needs to cut budgets and to be more empathetic.

This unit was interesting. I actually learned more about who the internet and peers think is a better leader, men or women. I learned that the majority think women. I actually learned more about the firing and disciplining world and how one boss prefers to do it.

2. Discuss your feelings/experiences from the team activities? Did it change your opinion on the subject? If so, how? If not, why?

This weeks activity was the discussion on whether men or women make better leaders. Before this unit I had never really thought about it and respected both men and women as leaders. 3. How you will utilize the information learned in your nursing practice.

I will utilize this weeks information in my nursing practice by being the best leader I can and representing women in the leader role. I will also take what I learned with my interview and if I am ever in the position of firing or disciplining I will draw from the interviewees thoughts.

4. You personal feelings about the material covered.

I personally feel that both women and men are great leaders. Each person is different and has a different style. Men and women also think differently and have varied leadership routines. It is hard to say which one is better than the other. But it is important to strive to be the best leader that we can be. I also liked revamping my resume and reviewing my goals for the next couple of years. It is nice to keep focused on what I really want to achieve and reminds me of what I need to do to achieve it.

Firing/Discipline Interview

For this assignment and I interviewed Bill Holt who was the boss of Pepper Belly’s and was in charge of firing/disciplining. I was very interested in this interview as to see how a boss would handle this situation, as I fortunately have never been fired or disciplined in a job.

As I sat with Bill he said that this was his least favorite part of his job but one that is necessary. As we went through the questions he was very open and honest with them. He states that he usually opens the conversation by asking how the employee is and how they feel they are doing. He likes to do this because it gives him a sense of how well the employee think he is doing. If he is disciplining the employee he will then bring up the incident or the situation that needs to be rectified. If he is firing the employee he will do the same. He said that once he has made the decision to fire the employee he tries to do it as soon as he can, but that he will usually never fire an employee on a first offense, unless it is severe. He will usually allow 3 written/verbal warnings before firing the employee. He states he has had an amazing staff and has rarely had to do either of these things. He likes to explain why they are being fired or terminated, he will never fire them without an explanation.

This gave me a whole new perspective and help me to have sympathy for people who fire/discipline. I liked the way that Bill handles the situation and I think it if I am ever in the situation where I am responsible for firing/discipline I would like to handle it similarly.
